Vinous

The 2024 Almaviva (70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot) from Puente Alto was aged for 18 months in French oak, 76% new. It opens with a dark-fruited profile of blackberry and blueberry, layered with plum, balsamic notes, chutney-like spice, licorice and fine oak. The warm vintage reinforces this darker, riper aromatic register, in line with the estate's mature style. On the palate, Puente Alto's gravel soils and Andean setting play a defining role, delivering rounded, polished tannins and textural finesse. Broad and slightly indulgent, the wine shows fine, lightly plush yet still reactive tannins, as it was recently bottled, and sustains the finish with delicate fruit. Here, vintage and house style align, resulting in a poised and expressive 2024. 08/2026

The 2024 Almaviva shows subtle exuberance with its hallmark restrained sweetness, with good depth of complexity and generosity. A touch of cedar and tobacco with sweet currants, berries and subtlety. Round and medium- to full-bodied, with the depth of cabernet sauvignon marrying the sweet spices from the carmenere. Structured yet fine-grained and polished. Very long finish. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 24% carmenere, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Drink after 2027. 07/2026

Wine Advocate

The 2024 Almaviva ranks as the most impressive and definitive iteration of the wine I have tasted to date. The nose delivers a degree of nuance, refinement and complexity that other vintages have glimpsed but never fully attained, seamlessly fusing incense, pipe tobacco, sage, sweet red pepper and singed cedar aromas with impeccable harmony and a graceful overall nature. On the palate, a classically suave, gourmand mouthfeel is energized by an uncommon vibrancy, flowing into a reverberant, saturated finish that lingers with filigreed tannins and a strident core of graphite-laden minerality. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with about 25% Carmenère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. 07/2026

The Drinks Business

Beautiful. Ethereal. Lifted and aromatically very precise despite the sense of subtle restraint. Cassis. Pink and green peppercorns. This is very pure and lifted. It’s radiant with lovely, very precise, floral notes. The aromatics of the Carménère and Cabernet Franc really sing and yet it is the Cabernet Sauvignon that provides the elegant, compact frame. A great advert both for the bond between them that is the terroir on which they grow and for the respect it is shown at Almaviva. 08/2026

Description

Almaviva is produced in Puente Alto, one of Chile’s most distinguished wine-growing areas at the foot of the Andes. The 2024 vintage marked the end of an exceptional period of drought in the region. Influenced by the El Niño climate phenomenon, rainfall in Puente Alto rose significantly, from an average of around 140 mm per year between 2019 and 2023 to 592 mm for the 2024 vintage. Crucially, the rain arrived at the right time. Around 460 mm fell during winter and early spring, replenishing the soil’s water reserves, while a further 130 mm arrived in May, safely after harvest.Spring was cooler than usual, while January through March brought warmer-than-average temperatures. The combination of abundant winter rainfall and a cold spring delayed the vines’ development, with veraison occurring two to three weeks later than normal. Temperatures dropped considerably in April and May, encouraging a slow and even ripening process that preserved the fruit’s acidity and purity. Harvest in Puente Alto began on March 25, two weeks later than in 2023, and concluded on May 3. Carménère from Peumo was picked between May 2 and 10. The resulting wines are marked by a cool-climate character, remarkable fruit, freshness and density.Almaviva 2024 is deep, intense and opaque ruby red. The aromatic profile is broad, pure and beautifully defined, beginning with vibrant cassis and blackberry before revealing layers of incense, cedar, forest floor and soft spices. The palate achieves an impressive balance between amplitude and elegance, ripeness and freshness, depth and persistence. Round, polished tannins create a velvet-like structure, enhancing the wine’s juicy character and immediate appeal, while its underlying tension provides precision and length. The blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot was aged for 18 months in French oak, 76% of it new. A beautifully harmonious and characterful Almaviva, the 2024 vintage offers an exceptional expression of the unique terroir of Puente Alto.
