Vinous

The 2024 EPU (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carménère, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot) from Puente Alto, Maipo, was aged for 12 months in French oak, 10% new. The nose opens with fine red cherry and plum, alongside balsamic herbs such as oregano and thyme. Slightly indulgent, the palate is juicy and energetic, with fine-grained tannins and a light grip built around its red-fruited core. Compared with previous vintages, it stands out for its more intense, clearly defined palate. 08/2026

The 2024 Epu is a beautiful expression of a cool vintage, opening slowly with a classically informed bouquet of sweet tobacco, red pepper, graphite and a ripe black-fruited core, gradually developing floral overtones in the glass. The mouthfeel fuses a sleek, seamless texture with refined sturdiness, carrying through to a poised, layered finish. This admirably conveys the vintage's perfumed, effortless nature, making it a striking introduction to Almaviva. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenère, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. 04/2026

The Almaviva identity is clear and sound here, with generosity, suppleness and roundness. The wine is not loud, with subtle currants and tobacco leaves as well as a hint of quince and sweet spice. Supple sweetness from carmenere with thoughtful, soft-grained tannins and medium body. Still juicy on its long finish. A blend of 80% cabernet sauvignon, 15% carmenere, 2% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Drink or hold. 07/2026

Inside Bordeaux

Generous, fragrant, with grip and balance, bright cherry and redcurrant fruits, crushed rose petals, lifted florality, fine and well placed tannins, good stuff. Michel Friou winemaker, Manuel Louzada director. 07/2026

The Drinks Business

Glassy, glossy, crystalline and with a very delicate and subtle spiciness. Floral too with lovely pink rose peppercorn notes intermingling with the blooms. Rather beautiful, as it often is, with gorgeous delicate iris and violet notes from the Carménère above all. I love the freshness and the sense of lift. The sheer quality and grain of the tannins is exceptional for what is, in effect, a second wine. 08/2026

Description

EPU is Almaviva’s second wine and was created as an accessible introduction to the world of this renowned Chilean estate. Like Almaviva, it comes from Puente Alto, one of Chile’s finest regions for Cabernet Sauvignon. EPU combines the classic character of this distinguished terroir with a generous, juicy style that is approachable from an early stage. The 2024 vintage brought an end to an exceptional period of drought in Chile. Influenced by the El Niño climate phenomenon, rainfall in Puente Alto increased dramatically, from an average of around 140 mm per year between 2019 and 2023 to 592 mm during the 2024 vintage. Much of this rainfall arrived during winter and early spring, replenishing the soil’s water reserves. Spring was unusually cool, delaying budbreak, flowering and veraison. Temperatures then dropped considerably during April and May, encouraging a slow and even ripening process. Harvest in Puente Alto began on March 25 and concluded on May 3. The resulting vintage is defined by freshness, clear fruit character and impressive density.EPU 2024 has a deep ruby-red colour and an intense, elegant nose led by fresh blackcurrant and red berries. Subtle layers of vanilla, earth and liquorice add complexity. The pronounced cassis character is particularly expressive in this cooler vintage, highlighting the classic and refined Cabernet Sauvignon character of Puente Alto. On the palate, EPU is juicy and voluptuous, with a smooth, luxurious texture and beautifully polished tannins. Vibrant acidity balances the ripe, concentrated fruit and carries the wine into a long, savoury finish. The blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carménère, 2% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot was aged for 12 months in French oak, 10% of it new. An elegant and characterful wine with immediate appeal, EPU 2024 offers an excellent introduction to the exclusive world of Almaviva.
