James Suckling

A well-built and inspired red blend of 55% merlot, 18% syrah, 14% cabernet franc, 10% malbec and 3% cabernet sauvignon. Peppery with succulence. It showcases dark plums, currants, baking spices and hints of earth. Medium-bodied with fine tannins that are slightly chewy. Some cocoa influence on the palate and toward the spicy, savory and persistent finish. Drink now. 07/2026

Inside Bordeaux

Firm, ripe and vivid blackberry and cranberry fruits, well balanced, fleshy and supple, white pepper and capsicum spice, with waves of campfire smoke, love the lift and easy charm of this wine. No Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage. 28.81ha, Augustin Deschamps director, Fabrice Bouillier winemaker. 07/2026

The Drinks Business

A little subdued aromatically when first tasted at Vinexpo Paris, but certainly a little more open and expressive when retasted at Joanne three months later. Incense, candlewax, dark berries and a little damson. Lovely ingredients and super integration of the elements – the alchemy is already achieved. Juicy. Fresh. But much richer, less vertical and more ample for it than the more lifted Le Capitelle. Graphite, a touch of cedar, a little walnut shell with lovely damson, dark plum and red and darker berry fruits. There’s a hint of game from the Syrah and that salinity and almost ferrous minerality of previous vintages. It’s less solar/solaire than the 2023 and more fresh for that. It’s also cool and spherical at the core, the tannins delicately outlining the external parameters like pencil strokes (from a very soft pencil). When the tannins grip this releases a disruptive whirl of freshness – red berry juice, cranberry perhaps – as if injected into the core of the midpalate. Certainly on a par with the best prior releases from Baronarques. 08/2026

Description

Domaine de Baronarques is located in the Haute Vallée de l’Aude in the Languedoc and has been part of the Baron Philippe de Rothschild estates since 1998. The property has 40 hectares under vine, including 29 hectares planted with red varieties. The vineyards are rooted in clay-limestone soils and benefit from the varied conditions found across the estate. The character of the Haute Vallée de l’Aude, combined with the estate’s precise approach to vineyard selection and winemaking, defines the style of Domaine de Baronarques. The 2024 red blend is composed of 55% Merlot, 18% Syrah, 14% Cabernet Franc, 10% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are an average of 24 years old. Following a mild, relatively dry winter, the growing season began early. Budbreak for the red varieties occurred between 25 March and 2 April. An extended flowering period was followed by alternating warm, dry conditions and cooler spells with rainfall. Summer temperatures continued to fluctuate, accompanied by a slight water deficit. Veraison occurred later than in recent vintages and developed over an extended period. Harvest took place between 23 September and 11 October, with the grapes arriving at the winery fully ripe and in excellent condition. The wine was matured for twelve months, with 26% of the barrels being new, including a significant proportion of 600-litre vessels. The combination of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon brings together different dimensions of fruit, spice, structure and freshness.Depth is the defining feature of the 2024 vintage. The wine opens with smoky and tobacco notes, lifted by a subtle graphite character, followed by ripe red and black fruit and a Mediterranean hint of thyme. On the palate, elegant structure and freshness are balanced by very fine-grained tannins. Notes of vanilla and spice emerge gradually through the finish, while the different varieties contribute to the wine’s overall harmony and complexity.
