Bordeaux en Primeur 2025

Bordeaux en primeur 2025 - timeless elegance, new precision

The 2025 vintage in Bordeaux is small but exceptional. A hot, dry growing season with occasional extreme heat waves resulted in very small, concentrated berries and thus the lowest harvest yields in many years—in some appellations, even in decades. What makes this vintage a standout, however, is that despite the heat, the wines display a surprising balance. Key factors in achieving this were rainfall in late August, cooler nights during the summer, and modern viticultural and winemaking techniques that allowed for the preservation of both ripeness and freshness.

Most of the red wines have an alcohol content of around 13% by volume. They combine depth, aromatic intensity, and an elegant freshness—with ripe, fine tannins that promise early drinkability without compromising aging potential. The 2016 vintage is often cited as a stylistic benchmark, complemented by the approachability of the 2023 and the fruit-forward character of the 2022. It is not an opulent, seductive vintage like 2009 or 2019, but a precise, balanced one—across all quality tiers, from Premier Cru to Cru Bourgeois.

The dry white wines and sweet wines from Sauternes and Barsac also demonstrate outstanding quality, with ideal conditions for botrytis development in the sweet wines and remarkable freshness and aromatics in the whites.

Regarding pricing: Although a small, high-quality vintage typically leads to rising prices, the current economic and political situation will hopefully prompt the châteaux to exercise restraint. At most, moderate increases compared to the already affordable previous year are to be expected. Thus, 2025 offers a rare opportunity: top quality at comparatively attractive subscription prices—with foreseeable potential for appreciation.
