Vinous

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon turned out beautifully. Aromatic, pliant and medium in body, the 2023 shows all the natural restraint of this cool, late-ripening year. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are some of the notes that grace this nuanced, inviting Cabernet Sauvignon from Ingelnook 01/2025

Still in barrel in February 2025, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts dark notes of cedar mulch, earth, black olives and black cherries. It's medium- to full-bodied, velvety and intensely flavored, with a long, earthy and savory finish. It shows excellent balance, along with unusually refined tannins for the Cabernet Sauvignon, which can sometimes be a bit coarse when compared to the Rubicon. 06/2025

James Suckling

An elegant, well-balanced and fresh-tasting estate wine with great flavors, good acidity and silky tannins. Classic black cherry, black olive and savory bay leaf and earth aromas on a medium to full body. The tannins are moderate, smooth and fine-grained. Easy to drink now, but will surely age well. Best after 2030. 01/2026

The Wine Palate

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it skips out of the glass with bright, cheery notes of kirsch, red currant jelly, and fresh black currants, giving way to nuances of mint tea, lavender, and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, the palate is light on its feet and refreshing, delivering fine-grained tannins and red and black fruit layers, finishing long and minerally. 06/2026

The Drinks Business

Dark, intense, compact and concentrated with a lovely, radiantly pure Cabernet fruit, gracious tannins and staggering potential. A brilliant wine from a top vintage, the oak already seamlessly integrated. Accessible already despite the considerable tannic count, but with very longterm aging potential. The best vintage I’ve tasted of this. 97. 08/2026

Description

The Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to John Daniel Jr., who produced the much-heralded 1941 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate’s history reaches back to original founder Gustave Niebaum, who brought vine cuttings from Bordeaux to the property. The 2023 vintage comes from the estate’s distinctive vineyards around Rutherford in Napa Valley, including Château, Red Barn, Cohn, Creek, Pritchett Hill, La Lomita and Garden. The 2023 growing season began with abundant rainfall, restoring valuable moisture to the vineyard soils after several dry years. The late, wet winter also protected the vines from frost. A cool spring extended the season’s slower pace through bloom, while ample moisture supported strong vine development and healthy fruit set. Warm, steady summer days then carried the fruit gently towards ripeness. These balanced conditions allowed the flavours and tannins to develop gradually, resulting in wines with vibrant freshness, bright acidity and a clear sense of minerality. The Cabernet Sauvignon was hand harvested with careful attention to the character of each block, beginning on October 6 in the Garden blocks and concluding on October 24 with the Red Barn vineyard. The 2023 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon opens with fresh cassis and mulberry, layered with the deep character of black raspberry. Savoury spice adds complexity, while subtle notes of oolong tea, green peppercorn and fresh herbs contribute freshness and an earthy dimension. The palate is structured and concentrated, with firm tannins that gradually soften into a smooth, well-rounded finish. The wine’s impressive tannin development provides both structure and length, while vibrant acidity keeps the fruit profile fresh and precise. The blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot was aged for 20 months in French oak, 52% of it new. A complex and expressive Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with depth, balance and the structure to develop beautifully with age.
