Château Durfort-Vivens 2020 2e Cru Classé, Margaux AC, MC

Château Durfort-Vivens has been in the Lurton family since 1961, when Lucien Lurton purchased it from the Gineset family. For many years, this Margaux estate, classified as a 2nd cru, was considered underperforming. However, since Lucien's son Gonzague took over, the estate has experienced a renaissance. The vineyards of Durfort-Vivens (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 20%, Cabernet Franc 15%) are planted on gravelly soils interspersed with limestone. The vinification process includes approximately 18 months of oak aging in 30-50% new oak barrels. The proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon is the highest of all wines in the southern Médoc in the final blend (82%) and gives the wine its classic cassis characteristics, as well as remarkable tannins and structure. Durfort-Vivens can be enjoyed after about 5 years in the bottle, but continues to improve for up to 10 years. Since 2016, the estate has been certified biodynamic.

The 2020 Durfort-Vivens is a dense, concentrated wine, just as it was en primeur. Blackberry jam, grilled herbs, lavender, menthol and chocolate are some of the many notes that build as the 2020 shows off its breadth and sheer power. Striking inner perfume and sweet aromatics lend an exotic flair that is so distinctive. Superb. 12/2022

The 2020 Durfort-Vivens is aged in two-thirds new barrel and one-third amphora. It has a fresh and lively bouquet, black cherries intermixed with veins of blue fruit, very pure and oddly Burgundy-like. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is well balanced with grainy tannins, quite strict and saline, lightly spiced and then easing down with a pliant, graphite-tinged, almost Pauillac-like finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle. 12/2022

The 2020 Durfort Vivens has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark cherries and berries mingled with hints of licorice, baking chocolate and mint. Medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, it's layered and concentrated, with lively acids and broad structural shoulders, its generous endowment of powdery tannin asserting itself on the youthfully firm finish. More tightly wound than the extroverted, charming 2019, the 2020 will demand patience, but it's a very strong performance for this estate. 04/2023

Aromas of blackberries, black olives, lead pencil and blueberries. Full-bodied with very velvety tannins. It’s big and rich for Margaux, but then it tightens at the finish. It will come around with bottle age. One for the cellar. 88% cabernet sauvignon and 12% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2026. 05/2023
