Château Giscours 2023 3e Cru Classé, Margaux AC, MC

Vinous

The 2023 Giscours is a potent, brooding wine. Black cherry, plum, new leather, dried herbs, chocolate and gravel infuse the palate with notable depth and intensity. This has really shut down post-bottling. Giscours is usually much more charming in its youth. Today, the stress of a vintage marked by heat and low yields of just 30 hectoliters per hectare comes through in the wine's tannic profile and overall feel. 03/2026

The 2023 Giscours demands coaxing on the nose. Tightly wound, blackberry, blueberry, violet and cedar develop in the glass, though it remains backward, suggesting cellaring is necessary. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins and a silver thread of acidity. The graphite element is a little more pronounced compared to its showing from barrel, nicely structured with a lively and quite spicy finish. After four to five years it should be ready to go but it should have the legs to offer 20-plus years' enjoyment. Tasted twice and oddly better at a tasting outside the château! 02/2026

The 2023 Giscours has turned out beautifully, unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of cherries, sweet berries, violets, undergrowth and rose petals. Medium- to full-bodied, it's exquisitely polished and layered, with sweet tannins, excellent mid-palate density and a penetrating finish. It's a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. Readers may remember that Giscours's old vines are frequently co-planted with younger replacements that have filled any gaps in the ranks over the years; so, blocks are now picked in two or three passages instead of all at once, with the younger vines picked first, something that helps to explain the quality of tannin attained in 2023. 04/2026

Deep purple-hued, the 2023 Château Giscours is beautifully done and brings a rare level of opulence while staying balanced and graceful. Cassis and more blue fruits, sappy flowers, violets, and minty herbs all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness as well as ripe, polished tannins. I love its mid-palate, and it has perfectly integrated acidity and one heck of a great finish. It's going to be a classic Margaux that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and evolve gracefully over the following two decades. The blend is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. 05/2024

Couleur sombre, intense et pourpre. Nez aromatique, au fruité mûr et frais. Délicat en entrée de bouche, savoureux au milieu, le vin caresse le palais, aromatique, avant de s'achever sur une finale un brin ferme, de longueur normale. Assemblage : 71 % cabernet sauvignon, 23 % merlot, 6 % cabernet franc. Degré d'alcool : 13,5°. Rendement : 31 hl/ha. 04/2024

This really expands in the mouth, with tight tannins that are polished and velvety. The fruit shows depth and purity. Medium to full body. Juicy center-palate. Like the ripe fruit in the center palate. The quality of the tannins in this rises to a new level. The tannins pull you through the wine. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc and the rest merlot. 04/2024
