The 2007 Comtes de Champagne is just starting to open aromatically, making it a very fine choice for drinking now. Hints of apricot, dried flowers, candied ginger, spice, chamomile, marzipan, brioche and lightly honeyed notes fill out the layers. There's gorgeous textural density and presence to match its generous personality. Soft contours wrap it all together in style. What a delight. 04/2025

Half are Avize and Le Mesnil, the rest Oger, Cramant and Chouilly. 4-5% of the total juice and only from Chouilly matures (no vinification) in new oak barrels for 3-4 months and which are replaced after 3 years. The oak is Allier and Limousin and they use 225 liter barrels from the Seguin Moreau cooperative in Cognac and Rousseau in Burgundy. Vintage 2007 is the first to be declared as Grand Crus, although previous vintages have also been so, but it has historically also included wine from Vertus and Bérgeres-les-Vertus. One of the champagnes I misjudged most gravely throughout my serious career. The first three times I was incredibly disappointed with potential points around 85 at best. Grassy, thin and slightly sulphurous like a good standard champagne and far behind all the Comtes vintages I've drunk. Suddenly, something happened and the classic buttery richness and sweet citrus note appeared. No heroic Comtes, but as usual very delicious. 11/2022

The 2007 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne continues to show very well, and it hasn't evolved appreciably since I last tasted it a few months ago. Revealing a pretty bouquet of lemon oil, lily pollen, dried white flowers, blanched almonds and crushed chalk, it's medium to full-bodied, chiseled and tensile, with excellent depth at the core, racy acids and a pure, precise and notably chalky finish. Tight-knit without being austere, it's a very classically balanced middleweight Comtes that has a long future ahead of it. 08/2019

This is a step up from the linear and fresh 2006. It shows subtle depth and power with a dense block of vivid fruit that's highlighted by lemon zest, green apples and hints of white peaches. Just the right amount of praline and nuts on the nose. The fine, tight bead provides a luxurious mouth feel. One for now or the cellar. Drink or hold. 07/2022
