The Drinks Business

2024 (Ribeira Sacra DO; 100% Godello planted on a very steeply sloping terraced vineyards between 200 and 600 metres of altitude; aged for 15 months in oak foudres; 0.5 g/litre of residual sugar; 13.5% alcohol; just 1562 bottles produced). Glassy, aerial, lifted and with a lovely searing freshness rising up from the depths – giving this a very vertical presence in the mouth. Wild fennel, rhubarb, tomato stem and lovely yellow stone fruits – notably Mirabelle plums – and confit melon. Delicate, subtle yet dynamic and energetic too. 09/2026

Inside Bordeaux

Love the bone dry, saline oyster shell, sea spray grip, captures a graphite, tension and interest that runs right through the palate, preserved lemons, gooseberry, rhubarb and sage, mouthwatering with a clear touch of steel. Fernando Gonzalez Riveiro winemaker. Tasted alongside the 2023, also excellent, underlining the consistency of this unusual white wine. 07/2026

Description

Cornamús reflects F. Algueira’s decades-long work to recover and preserve the indigenous white grape varieties of Ribeira Sacra, with a particular focus on Godello. For around 45 years, the estate has worked to safeguard the region’s viticultural heritage. Godello takes centre stage in Cornamús because of its ability to convey the freshness and balance of the local terroir. Its character is complemented by the distinctive minerality of the granite and quartz soils. The grapes come from three hectares in Abeleda and Aviador, within the Riberas del Sil subregion. The vineyards are planted on extremely steep terraces between 200 and 600 metres above sea level, with southeast and east-facing exposures. The soils consist of granite, quartz and gneiss. The vines are up to 30 years old, unirrigated and pruned according to the traditional simple Guyot method. A continental climate moderated by Atlantic influences contributes to the wine’s natural freshness. The grapes were hand-harvested in September 2024. At the winery, a combination of destemmed fruit and grapes pressed by foot was used. Fermentation began in stainless steel and was completed with 100% indigenous yeasts in a 1,000-litre foudre. The wine then spent 16 months ageing on its lees in one of the estate’s oldest 2,000-litre French oak foudres, with bâtonnage. The aim was to intervene as little as possible and allow the wine to develop naturally. The result places Godello’s freshness and balance alongside the pronounced mineral character of the vineyard. Granite and quartz bring a distinct stony quality, while extended lees ageing adds texture and depth without obscuring the wine’s identity. Cornamús is restrained and elegant, with a clear sense of place and a structure that reflects both the extreme hillside vineyards and F. Algueira’s long commitment to recovering the indigenous viticultural heritage of Ribeira Sacra.
