(Ribeira Sacro DO; a blend of 62% Mencia, 20% Merenzau and 18% Caiño planted on a very steep terraced vineyard of 200 to 600 metres of altitude; foot-trodden and 100 per cent whole bunch fermented in a single troncoconic oak vat with indigenous yeasts; matured in 225-liter barrels and 2,000-litre foudres for 24 months; 13% alcohol; tasted twice, first at the Joanne press tasting and then in Paris from a sample sent by the property). Bulby in its subtle florality – peony, maybe a little iris too. Elegant and refined, a little closed at first, but in an entirely good way, and with lovely, delicate, soft and caressing tannins. Crystalline and lifted, that floral note from the aromatics very much integrated with the fruit on the palate. Gorgeous. Surely the best ever from here and very beautiful both aromatically and texturally. A coup de coeur. 09/2026

Inside Bordeaux

Juicy and delicious, made to share. Combines a sense of controlled architecture with joyful fragrant and easy-to-love fruitfulness. Floral aromatics, slate and pumice stone texture, rose stem, freshly cut herbs, orange peel, blood orange, needs a carafe to really open up. Fernando Gonzalez Riveiro winemaker, 3.7ha estate, native yeast fermentation in 500l barrels, vineyards ranging from 200-600m in altitude, whole bunch fermentation. 07/2026

Description

Dolio is the result of four decades of work by F. Algueira on the exceptionally steep terraces of Doade and Abeleda in Ribeira Sacra. Many of these vineyards had been abandoned after the Spanish Civil War. Over the years, the estate has patiently restored and cultivated them, preserving a distinctive landscape along the Sil River. Dolio brings together fruit from the two most important domains and combines several of the region’s indigenous grape varieties. The 2022 blend consists of 62% Mencía, 20% Merenzao and 18% Caíño. The vineyards cover a total of 3.7 hectares in the Amandi and Riberas del Sil subregions, with terraces rising from 200 to 600 metres above sea level. The vines, up to 40 years old, are unirrigated and planted in a remarkably varied mix of slate, schist, granite, quartz and gneiss. South, southeast and east-facing slopes, together with a climate influenced by Mediterranean, continental and Atlantic conditions, shape the character of the fruit. The grapes were hand-harvested in September 2022. Whole bunches are used in the cellar, where they are traditionally foot-trodden in open French oak vessels before a period of cold maceration. Fermentation takes place with 100% indigenous yeasts in 500-litre French oak barriques. The wine then spends 21 months ageing in a combination of 225-litre French oak barriques and 2,000-litre oak foudres.Dolio reflects the combination of steep terrain, diverse geology and indigenous varieties that defines this part of Ribeira Sacra. Dark berry fruit and spice are complemented by a pronounced mineral character, while the extended ageing contributes depth and structure. Mencía provides the core of the blend, with Merenzao and Caíño adding further aromatic complexity. The result is a distinctive expression of the recovered hillside vineyards of Doade and Abeleda.
