Galatrona 2023 Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC, MO, Fattoria Petrolo

Fattoria Petrolo, located in Val d’Arno in Tuscany, is surrounded by castles, forests, and olive groves. Vineyards have existed there since medieval times, first planted by the Galatrona family, and since the 1940s managed by the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family. Today, Luca Sanjust leads the estate in its third generation, aiming to establish it among the region’s top producers. The winery is known for its strict quality standards. Initially, Sanjust rejected the Colli Aretini designation due to its loose regulations, marketing the wines instead as Toscana IGT. Since 2011, Petrolo has been part of the DOC Valdarno di Sopra, which is moving entirely toward organic viticulture—a philosophy long embraced at Petrolo.Over 20 years of sustainable practices and full organic certification since 2016 ensure top conditions across 30 hectares of mineral-rich vineyards at 250–450 meters altitude. Vines range from over 70 years old to more recent plantings from the 1990s. Grapes include Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petit Verdot, and both native and international varieties. With a deliberately low yield (about 70,000 bottles per year), quality is prioritized. In the cellar, tradition meets innovation: ancient terracotta amphorae, cement tanks, and various oak casks are used. 100% Merlot

The 2023 Galatrona,100% Merlot, is soft, plush and sensual. Dark blue/purplish fruit, cloves, new leather, menthol and licorice all meld together in the glass. Soft, caressing contours shape this mid-weight, understated vintage of the estate's flagship wine. The 2023 is not a huge Galatrona but is instead a wine that impresses with its finesse. This is a step up from the 2022. 02/2025 (I was so impressed with the Petrolo wines this year. In the past, I have been critical of the Trebbiano for its heavily reduced character. The 2023 shows what the estate is capable of when that quality is absent, when Trebbiano is truly allowed to shine. The 2023 Galatrona is a gorgeous wine in a very challenging year for Merlot, while the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Campo Lusso is a clear step up from the Galatrona of the same year. There’s plenty to like in the other wines, too. In fact, this is one of the most consistently outstanding ranges I have tasted from Petrolo in some time. Every wine is spot on.)

The aromas of black currants, graphite, lavender and violets are gorgeous. Black olives and walnuts, too. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins, a racy texture and small black berry-like flavors. Iron undertones as well as dark chocolate, dried sage and rosemary. Vertical nature to this. One for the cellar. Pure merlot. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2030. 07/2025
