Vinous

Dark ruby. Suave, complex aromas of blackcurrant, kirsch, licorice, mocha, toasty oak spices, cured meat and succulent herbs, with a hint of graphite. Lush and round, with deep, concentrated dark berry flavors accented by smoky, spicy oak, licorice candy and a suggestion of vanilla. This is surprisingly open and seamless, the gentle tannins absorbed by the sweet fruit and musky animal and herb flavors. The very long finish features penetrating blackberry and creme de cassis flavors, with suggestions of oak spice and smoked meat sneaking in late. Incidentally, this was the only Henschke wine I tasted this year bottled under cork. 07/2006

Deep garnet colored, the 2001 Hill of Grace offers aromas of warm red currant, black cherry compote, blackberries and dried Provencal herbs with an earthy undercurrent. Full, rich and well-structured in the mouth, it has crisp acid and a medium to firm level of rounded tannins, and finishes long with up-lifting herbal notes. Drink this one now to 2025+. 04/2013

Excellent vintage. This has the mark of a hot year with some slightly raisined grape aromas, dried currants and almost porty hints. Not too much spice, more prune and plum. The palate has simpler, dense shape and texture, less light and shade than most vintages. Could deliver similarly to the '58. Best from 2021. 05/2017
