Maya 2022 Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards

Dalla Valle Vineyards is recognized as one of Napa Valley’s preeminent family-run wineries. Founded in 1986 by Naoko and her late husband Gustav Dalla Valle, on the famed eastern hillsides of Oakville, Dalla Valle Vineyards has earned acclaim as one of world’s most celebrated wine estates, yielding wines of extraordinary character and complexity, vintage after vintage. Today, Dalla Valle is guided by the mother-and-daughter team of Naoko and Maya Dalla Valle, who work alongside an illustrious team that includes Consulting Winemaker Andy Erickson, Vineyard Manager Edgar Alfaro, as well as Consulting Enologist Michel Rolland. With a shared mission that Dalla Valle thrive for generations to come, this dedicated group stewards every aspect of the viticulture and winemaking with a level of meticulous care and detail reserved for the great First Growths. THE 2022 VINTAGE: The 2022 growing season commenced with a dry January and February, leading to an early budbreak in early March due to mild temperatures and scant rainfall. This early start was followed by a warm April and tempered by a cool and rainy May. Bloom occurred at the end of April, while the first signs of veraison emerged in early July. The fluctuating temperatures, ranging from cool and foggy to hot and dry, extended veraison for nearly a month. A warm August transitioned into a sweltering early September, marked by a ten-day heatwave that hastened the vineyard’s ripening. Thanks to the expertise and commitment of our in-house farming team, we harvested everything swiftly and efficiently. The resulting 2022 wines reflect the site’s warmth and the vibrant character of the vintage.

The 2022 Maya is a rare Maya that is Cabernet Franc-driven, the first since 1989 with a similar blend. Pliant and layered, the 2022 is sublime. Dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and espresso all build in the glass. A remarkable wine, Maya may very well turn out to be one of the wines of the vintage. It is certainly one of my favorites at this stage and a clear front-runner. 12/2024

Dalla Valle's 2022 Maya is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, dominated on the nose by scents of dark chocolate and black cherries, plus vaguely leafy notions and hints of dried spices. Tannic and taut, in obvious need of cellaring, this medium to full-bodied wine's tannins are not as deep or richly textural as they can be (as in the 2021, for example), but they remain impressive; and the finish exhibits superb length. The winery's Cabernet Sauvignon is more flattering to taste now, while the Maya may surpass it in time. 02/2025

The 2022 Maya is composed of 54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is the first time since 1989 that more Cabernet Franc than Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a fair bit of shaking to wake up notes of fresh boysenberries, wild blueberries, and red currants, giving way to an undercurrent of pencil shavings, garrigue, licorice, red roses, and iron ore. The full-bodied palate is very tightly wound with many layers of bright black, blue, and red berry flavors intertwined with minerally nuances and supported with a rock sold structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a lingering ferrous note. The Cabernet Franc really shines through here and it is so, so good!99+

Moving to the 2022 Maya, it's the first year since 1989 that has this cuvée includes more Cabernet Franc than Cabernet Sauvignon. (It's 54% Cabernet Franc and 46% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 20 months in 75% new barrels.) A fabulous nose of darker currants, leafy herbs, violets, camphor, new leather, and flower notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, polished mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a brilliant finish. 08/2025

An intricate, supple, luscious wine that's silky, full-bodied and elegant yet age-worthy. Aromas of blackcurrants, dark chocolate and spearmint, then flavors of blueberries, black cherries, violets and creme de cassis. Tightly structured but still generous, this red blend is known for long-term aging. Made from 55% cabernet franc and 45% cabernet sauvignon grapes that were biodynamically grown. Drinkable now, but best from 2030. 07/2025

Napa Valley; 45% Cabernet Sauvignon; 55% Cabernet Franc; aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 75% of them new; 15% alcohol). Grace in motion. Elegant, refined, deep, dark and svelte at the spherical intense and highly compact core. What I perhaps love about this the most is the restrained amplitude, the diameter of the core set by the tannins, super-svelte and yet textural and tactile as they are. That gives this an amazing impact and intensity. Lovely confit petals and violet. Parma violets in fact (well, maybe less ‘fact’ than sensation). Such grace. Such refinement. Such subtlety for a wine with so much natural power. A star of any autumn campaign.
