The 2023 Maya is, without question, one of the wines of the vintage. What a wine. Silky, aromatic and exceptionally finessed, the 2023 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. I have never tasted a young Maya with this much textural finesse and sheer polish. Floral Franc overtones open first, followed by crushed red-toned fruit, mocha, cinnamon, cedar and new leather. All the elements are so well balanced. 11/2025

The 2023 Maya is two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc, matured in 75% new French oak, with a tiny proportion kept in amphora. It starts off gently leafy and floral, then builds to a crescendo of dark fruit—black cherries, blackberries and cassis—with hints of cedar and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, it's concentrated and rich without any sense of weightiness, instead showing great length and freshness, culminating in a long, velvety and mouthwatering finish. Am I being stingy? Set up a comparison of this and the 2021 and let's see... 05/2026

The 2023 Maya brings the same intensity as the Cabernet Sauvignon, yet with another sense of elegance, offering notes of cassis, black cherries, graphite, crushed stone, and chalky minerality. Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Cabernet Franc and aging 23 months in 80% new French oak, it's full-bodied and beautifully balanced with no hard edges and ultra-fine tannins. This is a heavenly, layered, gorgeous wine that has perfection written all over it. 12/2025

The aromatics are really something. Lavender, violet, white rose, red cherry and red fruit aromas follow through to a medium body with fine, firm tannins that run the length of the wine and give energy and drive all the way to the end. A hint of cedar in the finish, with fine austerity and lightly toasted oak. A work of art in purity and finesse. 67% cabernet sauvignon and 33% cabernet franc. Drink in two or three years. 06/2026

Something of an icon, and in a vintage like this we are close to vinous perfection, above all with all that Cabernet Franc in the blend. This is incredible texturally, if aromatically a little closed at present. In the mouth the texture is sublime silken sheets willowing in the breeze. For a wine with such density, this is floaty, aerial and lifted, not at all linear, blocky or stratified as you perhaps expect it to be. Sinuous is the word, with lovely eddies and ripples of freshness titillating the tongue. So aerial and gravitydefying given the tannic volume and sheer midpalate density. Wow! A wine to covet (or at least one that I do!). 08/2026

Description

The 2023 Maya marks a new chapter at Dalla Valle Vineyards in Napa Valley. It was the first vintage produced in the estate’s newly remodelled winery. The growing season itself was characterised by balanced conditions. Abundant winter rainfall replenished soil reserves, followed by a mild and measured spring and a long, temperate summer. Stable autumn conditions allowed the fruit to remain on the vines until full maturity and permitted a deliberate, unhurried harvest. The grapes were picked between October 3 and 6.Maya 2023 is composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Cabernet Franc. The wine was aged for 23 months in French oak and amphora, with 75% of the oak being new. The combination of vessels provides structure and aromatic development while maintaining the freshness and mineral character of the fruit. The aromatic profile centres on dark fruit, with blackberry and cassis followed by violet and fresh floral notes. Beneath the fruit lies a distinct mineral character reminiscent of crushed wet stones and graphite, adding depth and definition. Subtle spice-box notes emerge through the mid-palate without obscuring the fruit. On the palate, the wine combines concentration with a clearly defined structure. Fine-grained tannins provide shape and persistence, while the fruit and mineral elements remain closely integrated. The finish is long and resonant, with the tannins carrying the wine through to a sustained close. The 2023 Maya reflects the characteristics of its Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc composition, together with the extended élevage in French oak and amphora.
