Pure crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, and violet nuances all define the aromatics of the 2023 Quintessa, another gorgeous wine from this talented winemaker. Based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carménère, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot aged 22 months in 60% new French oak with a portion resting in terracotta amphora, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with remarkable purity, ultra-fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. This pure, balanced, graceful, seamless beauty is delicious today yet won't hit its prime for a decade. Drink 2026-2036. 06/2026

Luscious dark fruit that’s soft and supple. Aromas of blackberries, currants, violets, graphite, licorice, spices, dried flowers and chalk. The palate is densely packed, with dark fruit, fine minerally tannins and bright acidity, bringing a rustic, ferric feel and a bright, fresh and focused profile. What an exceptional release. Made from 90% cabernet sauvignon, 5% cabernet franc, 2% carmenere, 2% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Aged in 60% new French oak. Drink or hold. 03/2026

Pretty and very lifted aromatically with lovely redolent if subtle floral notes – predominantly violet, with maybe a hint even of lavender. Crystalline and very pure, almost a little Margalais in its delicate floral character and finesse. Very elegant. A little candlewax. Graphite and a hint of cedar with a lovely pure cassis fruit. In short, another fabulous wine from this great Californian vintage. 08/2026

The Wine Palate

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Carménère, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. It waltzes out with energetic notes of fresh black currants, wild blueberries, and violets, giving way to nuances of mint tea, pencil lead, and anise. The full-bodied palate is tightly coiled, revealing layers of black and blue fruit with firm, exquisitely ripe tannins and a racy line to support, finishing long and perfumed. Very impressive. 04/2026

Description

The 2023 vintage reveals Quintessa with remarkable clarity and balance. After three years of drought, an exceptionally wet winter brought abundant rainfall to Rutherford, replenishing the lake and deeply saturating the vineyard soils. These reserves provided the foundation for a long and steady growing season. Cool, wet conditions in early spring delayed budbreak by two to three weeks, setting an unhurried pace that continued through the mild summer and allowed the grapes to ripen gradually and precisely.Harvest began on September 22 with Merlot from the Las Casas block and concluded on October 30 in the Bench block. The Quintessa estate has been farmed according to organic principles since its establishment in 1989 and according to biodynamic practices since 1996.The blend is led by 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Cabernet Franc, Carménère, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Fresh cassis and violets open the bouquet, followed by notes of tobacco leaf and subtle herbs. The palate combines purity and depth, with dense yet supple fruit, bright acidity and fine, precise tannins. Twenty-two months in French oak, including 60% new barrels, contribute further texture and complexity, while a small proportion of terracotta amphora adds another dimension. Vibrant, poised and beautifully harmonious, Quintessa 2023 finishes with remarkable length and grace.
