Vinous

The 2023 Solaia has gained a measure of weight since I first tasted it a few months ago. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry, graphite and dried herbs soar from the glass. Cabernet Sauvignon speaks with notable eloquence and character. There's gorgeous purity and restraint here. 08/2026

James Suckling

A big Solaia with lots of fruit and spices as well as mint and spearmint. Aromatic. Full-bodied with lots of fruit and chewy tannins. Muscular and juicy for a modern Solaia. Needs three to four years of age to come together. Best after 2028. 07/2026

Decanter

Solaia sings in 2023. It's supremely vertical with already-integrated sandy tannins, its tall frame adorned with crunchy, sapid forest berries, chocolate, menthol, iodine and floral top notes. Generous and finessed, it's drinking surprisingly well at this early stage and will continue to prosper for the next two decades at least. 06/2026

Description

Solaia is one of Tuscany’s great wines and is produced only in exceptional vintages. The approximately 20-hectare Solaia vineyard is located on the Tenuta Tignanello estate at an altitude of 350 to 400 metres, facing southwest. Its calcareous soils, rich in Alberese and Galestro, contribute to the wine’s distinctive character. The Antinori family produced Solaia for the first time in 1978, and Sangiovese has been part of the blend since the following vintages. The 2023 growing season began with a moderately cold and dry winter. From late April through June, cool and rainy conditions provided excellent water reserves in the soil. Summer was warm and dry without significant heat spikes, while moderate rainfall in August and a regular seasonal pattern through September and October allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. Harvesting in the Solaia vineyard began in early October with Sangiovese, followed by Cabernet Franc and concluded on October 13 with Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes were carefully harvested, destemmed and meticulously selected before gentle fermentation and maceration. The wine was then aged for approximately 15 months in French oak barriques, with the individual lots matured separately before being blended to create the final Solaia.Solaia 2023 is an intense ruby red with purplish hues. The nose combines ripe wild berries with blackberry, blueberry and blackcurrant, followed by plum and fig. Delicate spicy and balsamic notes of pepper and liquorice add depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is rich and vibrant, carried by silky, enveloping tannins and energetic freshness. The refined structure leads into a long, intense finish marked by subtle notes of bitter cocoa and coffee. At 14.5% alcohol, the 2023 Solaia combines elegance, complexity and approachability with the structure required for extended ageing. A beautifully balanced vintage with considerable depth and personality.
