The 2024 Yattarna Chardonnay is creamy, sleek and so polished. This is a brilliant wine. This and the Reserve Bin A usually duke it out for my favorite wines of the release each year, and in the end, I don't suppose it matters too much which wins. The Yattarna is stylistically typified by streamlined composure, length and compact complexity, while the Reserve Bin A is more flinty and more immediately seductive. I love them both. Anyway, both of these wines in this year's release look fantastic. 07/2026

The quality and prestige of this renowned bottling jumps from the glass, balancing deep unctuous aromas of grilled lemon, orchard fruits and citrus blossom intertwined with a reductive salty edge of wet stone, flint and cashew. The palate is packed with flavor and complexity that is almost overwhelming until the salivating acidity cuts right through, leaving a tense and flamboyant finish. Grand cru quality, drinking wonderfully now with plenty of time to unravel in the cellar. Made from fruit grown in Tumbarumba, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 07/2026

Inside Bordeaux

Stands head and shoulders above so many in the lineup, delivering grip, lift and joy. Slowly stretches out through the palate, gunsmoke, preserved lemons, elderflowers, white pear, delicious, full of impact and personality, skilful winemaking teasing out a ton of character. 07/2026

The Drinks Business

A big step up here in quality from Bin 311 when tasted in Paris, as ever, and an exceptional vintage of this exceptional and often underappreciated wine. Tasted after Bin 311, this is of course fuller and richer, but don’t be mistaken, this is a wine – above all in 2024 – that is all about scrunchy freshness and fruit purity. It also has a delightful white florality and a lovely hint of lanolin. Floral field honey, lime juice and lime zest, blood orange, white melon, a little hint of jasmine and that redolent Yattarna candlewax. Gooseberry and white grapefruit. Grace and charm, solar but strikingly fresh with it. Very zesty and, at the same time, chalky on the finish. Refined and gently pulsating too as the acidity ripples all the way to a long distant horizon. 07/2026

Description

First released in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Yattarna was the result of one of Australia’s most ambitious and closely followed white-wine development projects. Penfolds set out to create a Chardonnay of exceptional quality that would establish a new benchmark for fine Australian white wine. No fewer than 144 trial wines were produced before Yattarna was launched, a pioneering process commemorated by the name “Bin 144”. The name Yattarna comes from an Indigenous language and means “little by little, gradually”, reflecting the wine’s philosophy of continuous refinement from one vintage to the next. The 2024 vintage was shaped by cool conditions across Tumbarumba, the Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. The growing season was long and even, with a predominantly mild summer and minimal heat stress. Extended hang time allowed the Chardonnay to mature slowly and evenly, preserving natural acidity while developing clean, precisely defined fruit. The different harvest timings across the three regions further contributed to the balance and consistency of the final wine.Yattarna 2024 is bright pale gold with a green hue. The nose is focused and quietly complex, led by mineral impressions of wet stone, flint, iron and slate, intertwined with oyster shell, sea spray and fresh linen. With air, more subtle layers emerge: pistachio nougat, green olive brine, curry leaf, roasted macadamia, slivered almond and brioche, with a touch of struck match and toasted oak spice. The palate is defined by fine phenolic grip and remarkable length. Bright acidity frames flavours of sea salt, caper and ocean freshness, supported by a delicate lemon-curd creaminess and an iron-like mineral tension. Oak and alcohol are remarkably discreet. The wine was matured for eight months in French oak barriques, 56% new and 24% one-year-old. A restrained, precise and beautifully persistent Chardonnay, Yattarna 2024 combines purity, tension and composure with the structure to develop gracefully through 2047.
