Vinous

The 2022 Yjar was aged roughly 30 months in foudres and barrels of varying sizes. Comprising Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and other varieties from an old bush-trained vineyard in Labastida, it offers a complex, nuanced nose of cherry, dried flowers, balsamic tones, delicate oak and subtle blackberry. On the palate, it achieves a rare equilibrium between intensity and finesse, finishing long with incense and violet. Despite the warmth of the vintage, the tannins remain fine, supported by élevage yet never dominated by it. Its chalky mouthfeel speaks clearly of the site. A Spanish grand vin that comfortably converses with top Bordeaux while remaining deeply Riojan in spirit. 04/2026

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate

The 2022 Yjar comes from a warm and dry year and was made with grapes from old vines planted with a massal selection of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and others. It fermented in small open-top oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in foudres and barrels of different sizes for 30 months. It's surprisingly fine and elegant, not showing any heat or ripeness, coming through as very harmonious and fresh. It's fine-boned and balanced, with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.72 and 5.08 grams of acidity, and it has very fine, elegant tannins. It keeps its quality in a super difficult vintage like 2022. 7,880 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. 03/2026

Dark berries, blueberries, dried flowers and aromatic herbs. This has the precise tannins characteristic of the place, focused and chalky with a saline touch, enticing. Chalky, with fruit. Saline on the finish. Drink now. 07/2026

Open and expressive, opentextured too with very gracious finegrained tannins and plenty of layering. A little sweet spice; a hint of candlewax; a delicate wild floral and herbal note too; bright red and darker berry fruits, with almost a little pêche de vigne. Juicy, sapid, ample and with lovely engaging grippy tannins that really pixilate and delineate the midpalate. Lovely. Beautifully composed and very elegant. 08/2026

Inside Bordeaux

This wine is now firmly on the global radar, and continues to be one of the highlights of my tasting calendar. Restrained, understated, mouthwatering, precise, vivid raspberry and redcurrant fruits, anis, black tea, lavender, poised, drawn out and just an utterly brilliant wine that is worth talking about. Telmo Rodriguez is winemaker of this 3.8ha plot set within his family Remelluri estate in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño, Rioja Alavesa. 07/2026

Description

YJAR comes from Labastida in Álava, at the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño. The estate’s 3.8-hectare historic vineyard lies at an altitude of 600 to 800 metres. The old vines are goblet-trained and planted as a mixed field blend, combining Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Granegro and Rojal. The vineyard is rooted in deep, loamy soils derived from marl and enriched with abundant colluvial material from the Sierra del Toloño. High carbonate levels, extensive stone content and alkaline conditions define the site. The 2022 vintage was marked by drought and high summer temperatures. A cold, rainy winter had replenished the soil’s water reserves, but rainfall was scarce during spring and summer. This accelerated the growing cycle and resulted in one of the estate’s earliest harvests. Despite the demanding conditions, the grapes remained in excellent sanitary condition. Careful monitoring of ripeness allowed the fruit to be harvested at the appropriate moment. The grapes were hand-picked into cases between September 27 and October 6.Fermentation takes place naturally with indigenous yeasts in small open-top wooden vats. The wine undergoes a total maceration of 30 days, allowing a gradual extraction of colour, aromas and tannins. YJAR 2022 is composed of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Granegro and Rojal. The technical sheet records a production of 7,889 bottles.YJAR is also closely connected to the history of Labastida and the development of Rioja winemaking. In 1787, Manuel Quintano produced wines in Rioja and Labastida using methods considered modern for his time. In the 19th century, Labastida became an important centre of the so-called “Médoc Alavés”, an initiative influenced by winemaking practices from Bordeaux. YJAR draws on this history while focusing on the character of its high-altitude historic vineyard beneath the Sierra de Toloño.
