The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very seductive, candied bouquet with pure blueberries and red cherry fruit under a veneer of vanillary new oak that seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, smooth in texture, but you might argue, missing the mineral tension on the finish compared to others. It is a very competent Clos Saint-Jacques albeit not the most memorable. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. 11/2018

Clear fresh mid purple. Quite a discreet nose but certainly classy. Smart use of oak, a little bit of spice and sandalwood. The sense of classy discretion continues on the palate, with the oak however remaining quite a forceful presence. Medium to long finish. Tasted Sep 2019.

Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the most reticent wines in the Jadot portfolio this year, reluctantly unfurling in the glass with notes of red berries, rose petals, forest floor and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, multidimensional core, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a notably long and expansive finish. While there is considerable upside here for the patient, this will demand significant bottle age. While the 2015 rendition is more flamboyant, the 2016 may well rival it in ultimate quality. 04/2019

Blackberries and ripe strawberries with lemon rind and rose petals, following through to a full body and dense, powerful tannins, which are, nonetheless, ripe and mature. Wonderful richness and density at the finish. Solid as a rock. Try after 2022. 01/2019
