The 2020 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a vibrant, menthol-tinged bouquet that bursts from the glass, touches of quince and yellow plum coming through with time. The palate is very well balanced with orange zest and tangerine, very harmonious and poised with a hint of apricot towards the finish. Delicious, exuberant and punchy. Bottled under Diam 30. Oak and a little honeysuckle, seemingly later picked, but still really attractive. Harmonious in the mouth, ripe golden citrus with a fine fresh finish that manages to contain the beginnings of a honeysuckle exuberance. Drink from 2024-2030. Tasted May 2024.

The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is beautiful, unwinding to reveal aromas of lime, orange oil and crisp green orchard fruit, mingled with freshly baked bread, buttery pastry and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with terrific cut and a seamless, elegant profile, it will offer a broad drinking window. Dominique Lafon celebrated his official retirement in December 2021, after 37 years at the domaine, and is handing over the reins to daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, even if he will surely still be on hand to help the new generation for many years to come. He can reflect with satisfaction on an important career, as the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified and as one of his generation's leading pioneers of organic farming. And he can certainly be satisfied with the 2020 vintage, a terrific success at this address. As the accompanying notes attest, I was very impressed, and special mention is owing to the best set of red wines I can remember tasting here. 01/2022
