The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has quite a rich bouquet with tropical tones, maybe to the detriment of the mineralité that is slightly masked at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite saline, lightly spiced with a vibrant finish that finally delivers the spiciness. Maybe pipped by the Les Charmes this year, this is a classy but not peak Perrières. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30 10/2021

More opulent, with some melon and light peaches, but with great charm and still a poised definition. Maybe a fraction less classic than some because of these more exotic notes. There is certainly a joyous opulence, a Perrières which will give pleasure relatively early. Drink from 2025-2032. Tasted May 2024.

The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is one of the more introverted wines in the range, unwinding to exhibit notes of lime zest, crisp Anjou pear, exotic fruits, white flowers and spices. Medium to full-bodied, chalky and saline, it may take on additional dimension with further élevage, but for now I'd rank this behind Charmes and Genevrières this year. Dominique Lafon celebrated his official retirement in December 2021, after 37 years at the domaine, and is handing over the reins to daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, even if he will surely still be on hand to help the new generation for many years to come. He can reflect with satisfaction on an important career, as the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified and as one of his generation's leading pioneers of organic farming. And he can certainly be satisfied with the 2020 vintage, a terrific success at this address. As the accompanying notes attest, I was very impressed, and special mention is owing to the best set of red wines I can remember tasting here. 01/2022
