The 2020 Meursault Les Porusots 1er Cru feels a bit fatigued on the nose. It lacks some cohesion and vibrancy at first, but that develops with time in the glass, improving with each swirl. The palate is nicely balanced with a spicy opening, stem ginger and a touch of lemon balm. A little oily in texture, the imprimatur of the growing season is clearly written on this wine compared to its peers, yet the terroir does come through with aeration. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. 05/2024

Inside Burgundy

A mix of oak and ample white fruit. The toast from the barrel appears on the palate too, and the wine does not quite have the length of our favourites. Comes together a little more in the glass though, just a little understated at the moment. Puts on weight and depth as it develops in the glass. Drink from 2026-2035. Tasted May 2024.

A particular success this year is the 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Porusots, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with notes of crisp orchard fruit, citrus zest, white flowers, blanched almonds and wheat toast. Medium to full-bodied, tangy and chiseled, it's vibrant, concentrated and incisive, concluding with a chalky finish. Assessed at this early juncture, it's as good a Porusots as I can remember tasting chez Lafon. Dominique Lafon celebrated his official retirement in December 2021, after 37 years at the domaine, and is handing over the reins to daughter Léa and nephew Pierre, even if he will surely still be on hand to help the new generation for many years to come. He can reflect with satisfaction on an important career, as the first generation of the Lafon family to become a farmer and grow the grapes he vinified and as one of his generation's leading pioneers of organic farming. And he can certainly be satisfied with the 2020 vintage, a terrific success at this address. As the accompanying notes attest, I was very impressed, and special mention is owing to the best set of red wines I can remember tasting here. 01/2022
